Gertrude Nagel Obituary

Gertrude Nagel, daughter of Jacob Hoffman and Katie (Rosler) was born on July 21, 1928 in Eatonia, Saskatchewan.  Gertie grew up on the family farm, south of Eatonia, with her four brothers.  She attended the Cornfeld school until the age of 15 when she moved to Regina to finish her high school at Luther College.  She studied and gained her nursing diploma at the Grey Nun’s Hospital in Regina in 1951.

Later that same year Gertie moved to Leader where she met Norman Nagel.  They married in 1953 and together they raised 2 sons and 4 daughters.  She was also blessed with 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Gertie loved her gardens, with a big vegetable garden at the farm and her beautiful flower beds in town.   She was keen to try out new recipes on her family and was an avid baker and loved to sew.  Gertie was active in the community; teaching various 4H programs and volunteering with the Lutheran Ladies Auxilliary as well as the Western Senior Citizens home.

Gertie’s faith in God was a large part of her life and was exhibited through her relationships and outlook on life.  She would always tell us that goodness was around the corner and even though we may not be able to see our way now that everything would turn out in the end.

In 2013, Gertie’s health began to fail and she moved into the Western Senior Citizens Home.  She enjoyed the Home immensely and was most grateful for the loving care received from her new found friends and family.

On July 26th, 2018, five days after her 90th birthday, Gertie passed away peacefully in her sleep.

Gertie was predeceased by her father, her mother, her husband Norman, and her brothers Alfred and Oscar.

Left to fondly remember her are her children, Ron (Dianne), Audrey, Cliff, Joanne, Debbie and Marj; her grandchildren Darren, Scott (Nicole), Genny, Kristin and Aaron (Rachel); her great grandchildren Lucas, Lily and Reese, her brothers Fred (Marion) and Ed (Lorna) and many nieces and nephews.

Gertie’s love of family and friends, strength and courage will be fondly remembered by all who met her.

If so desired, donations in Gertie’s memory are gratefully accepted to the Leader and District Integrated Health Care Facility c/o the Dr Irwin Foundation at drirwinfoundation.com (2051 Saskatchewan Drive, Swift Current, Sask,. S9H 0X6).
