Alice Mae Sorestad Pickett was born at Buchanan, SK on March 3, 1939, to Olaf and Adeline Sorestad. She was the second of four children, and the only girl. She and her three brothers Don, Ralph and Clifford grew up on the family farm, and they all learned to work hard. She attended high school at L.C.B.I. in Outlook, SK, graduating in 1958. After graduating from high school, she attended a year of bible school at L.C.B.I. and then attended Teacher’s College in Saskatoon graduating in 1960. With teacher certificate in hand, she took a job teaching in Maple Creek, where she made life-long friends, and, more importantly to her, she also met Harvey Pickett. Alice took a job in Hanna in 1961, and so a long-distance relationship with Harvey began. She and Harvey married in 1962 and had two daughters, LaVonne and Leanne. She taught a bit after her marriage but was mostly a mother and wife, helping Harvey run the ranch.
Alice was very social and active in her community, especially if music was involved. She was a talented musician, playing piano and guitar most of her life. She had a beautiful alto voice and effortlessly sang harmonies by ear. Social gatherings almost always involved music and/or jam sessions. She was a church organist for over 60 years, playing for weddings and funerals in almost every church and venue in town.
Alice and Harvey retired and moved to Maple Creek in 1992, building a home just in time for their grandchildren to begin multiplying. Alice continued with her musical volunteering, while also being active in the Lutheran Church and various community events. There was always time for visiting and socializing with neighbours and friends, new and old. In June of 2024 it was time for change again and they moved into a condo at Creekside, where they settled into a new rhythm.
Alice passed away peacefully at Oasis Long Term Care in Maple Creek February 24, 2026. She is survived by her husband Harvey; daughters LaVonne (Rick) and Leanne (Darrel); grandchildren Lindsay, Layne (Olivia), Linden (Andrea), Laramie (Zarley), Bailey (Bari), and Quinn (Noah); great-grandchildren Arden, Myla, Lacey and Holly; brother Clifford; as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her parents Olaf and Adeline Sorestad; her brothers Donald and Ralph; and grandson Graeme.
We will miss her.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Salvation Army Church in Maple Creek. Lunch to follow.
