Angela Buchanan Obituary

Angela Marie Buchanan, born on July 14th, 1969, in Red Deer Alberta, departed from us on December 19th, 2025, in Swift Current Saskatchewan, after battling cancer for 6 years. She went from this world surrounded by family and without pain, both of which were really important to her and to us. Angela leaves behind her husband Leonard, and her children, Megan, Tavis and Joeseph. She is also survived by her brother Brent, mother-in-law Marilyn, sister-in-law Lisa (Rob), and her nieces/nephews Terri (Eric), Dallas, Kelly, Dakota, Matthew, Chelsea, Andrew, Jager and Cameron, as well as many other aunts, uncles and extended family. She is survived and missed by too many friends and community members to name.

Angela was born to Dwayne & Nancy Cornell and was the youngest of 4 children and the only daughter. Her family moved around a lot in their youth, and she lived all over Northern Alberta while growing up. Even from a young age Ang was willing to try anything from horse riding with her cousin Teha to getting into mischief later with her high school girlfriends. When Ang was 23, she went out on the town with one of these friends named Wendy and just happened to meet the love of her life Leonard. After the first time they met, it was meant to be and in 1993 they married in Lacombe Alberta and moved to Maple Creek, SK to be closer to the ranch. In 1994, they welcomed their first child Megan, followed by Tavis in 1996 and finally Joeseph in 1997, following that they moved out to the ranch. Other than 2 years (2003 & 2004) where they lived in Alonsa Manitoba, they were on the ranch in Govenlock. Ang loved the ranch life and loved helping with the cows from feeding to calving she got in everywhere that she was able to help out. Ang held many jobs over the years from the RM to working at Cypress Hills Park, to Fort Walsh and finally ended up working for the Cypress Health Region as an MOA which she really enjoyed. Ang had many hobbies and passions like running, crafting, traveling, shopping, shoes, and games and loved to do these activities/shared passions with her many friends. Ang was also a very accomplished potter and although she picked up pottery a bit later in life you would have never known it from the skill and passion, she poured into each piece she made. Of all the things she tried and accomplished her greatest joy and pride was her children. She would talk (& brag) about them often. She was so proud of all of them, Megan the teacher and caretaker, Tavis for his love of the land, farming ability and creativity, and Joe with his solid dependability serving his crews while wildland firefighting and interest in photography which she shared with him.

In 2019 she was first diagnosed with breast cancer and life was never quite the same. However, she never let it stop her from living and she went on trips to London (twice!), Scotland, Las Vegas, deep sea fishing and more. She always was out doing and living and never let herself miss out on the experience. She did more than 100 treatments during her cancer time as well as radiation and surgery and through it all she was a joke cracking, joy bringing force to be reckoned with.

I feel like we have so much more to say but Ang’s life was much too big to be boiled down into a simple couple of paragraphs, but what I think she would hope is that everyone would remember how she lived instead of what took her. She was fierce in her love for both her family and her many friends, she was hilarious and told stories that actually made you cry from laughing, she always encouraged you to take the trip and to take the chance because what was the worst thing that could happen? “They take away your birthday?”. I know going forward we will all be carrying Ang in our hearts with us and I hope that encourages everyone to go for it, just like she would have told them too. Oh, and make sure to have a drink of good scotch as well.

We will be gathering to celebrate Ang’s life on Friday, January 2nd at 2:00pm at the Consul Community Hall. Anyone who would like to celebrate with us is welcome to join. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice in her name.
