Arnold Wickstrom Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Arnold Keith Wickstrom, age 79 of Maple Creek, SK, formerly of Admiral SK, announce his passing on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

Arnold was born in Shaunavon on September 26, 1944.  He was the youngest child of Harry and Eileen Wickstrom.  He took his schooling in Admiral and went on to Saskatchewan Technical Institute in Moose Jaw to study welding.  Shortly after completing his program at STI, he began farming with his father and brothers south of Admiral.  On November 3rd, 1967, he wed Barbara Ann McGuire.  They continued to farm south of Admiral, where they raised their children, Kurt, Roxanne, Crystal and Janelle.  In 1975 they built their home on the farm where they lived until moving to Maple Creek in August of 2021.

Arnold loved sports, hunting and the outdoors. He was an avid curler with fond memories of competing and later spectating.  After harvest, Arnold enjoyed annual hunting trips to northern Saskatchewan and the Frenchman River Valley.  He loved snowmobiling. In 1978, he was instrumental in organizing snowmobile drag racing in Admiral.  Arnold loved to walk and logged countless miles throughout his life.  He was passionate about vehicles and enjoyed being behind the wheel, even just to go check crops.  After retiring from farming, he spent much of his free time in the shop welding and fabricating things from firepits to trailers.

Arnold cherished his family and friends.  He and Barbara took many trips with their children, travelled with sports, horses and numerous other activities.  The family camped in the Cypress Hills during the summer.  Fall was for hunting, whether he went north, or friends came south.  Winter nights were spent playing cards and pool.  When grandchildren came along, Arnold loved exposing them to the farm and outdoors.  He was particularly proud of his grandson’s passion for sports and loved hearing his granddaughters sing and play violin and piano.

Moving to Maple Creek in 2021 gave Arnold the opportunity to make many trips to the Cypress Hills to go for a walk, visit friends and family or just to get a much-loved ice cream and enjoy the fresh air.

Arnold is predeceased by his parents, Harry and Eileen, siblings Ramona, Harold, Gordon, Doreen and Joyce (Ham), granddaughter Eve Wickstrom as well as several in-laws, extended family and dear friends.  He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara, son Kurt (Cora) Wickstrom and granddaughter Elizabeth, daughter Roxanne (Fabio) Azzoni and grandsons Leonardo and Tommaso, daughter Crystal (Connelly) Sherwick and grandsons Colby and Lyndon and daughter Janelle (Jay) Meyer.

The family is grateful for the wonderful care Arnold received from the staff at the Long Term Care Unit of the Southwest Integrated Healthcare Facility in Maple Creek.  For this, they will forever be grateful.

At Arnold’s wishes, there will not be a funeral.  If you so wish, memorial donations can be made to the Southwest Integrated Healthcare Facility, Long Term Care, Box 1330, Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, S0N 1N0.
