On October 19, 2023, Dorothy Adeleine (Galbraith) McFarlane passed away peacefully in Pines L.T.C. facility in Maple Creek, SK.
Dorothy was born in Maple Creek on July 6, 1928, and grew up in the Murraydale District with her parents Ken and Wylia Galbraith and two brothers, Pat and George where she attended Murraydale school. Her first jobs were at the Dixon store and the Maple Creek Creamery. In August of 1948 she married Jack McFarlane and in 1949 they bought a farm east of town where they raised their two children.
Dorothy loved the farm life, milking at least three cows, raising cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and geese all while growing a big garden. She belonged to several service clubs throughout the years, memorably Rebecca Lodge and Hay Creek Homemakers. In 1974 Dorothy began working at Cypress Lodge as a dietary aide, which she would do for almost 20 years. In 1975 they sold the farm and moved to a parcel of land on the west side of Maple Creek where Jack developed Willowbend Trailer Court. In 1981 they moved from the trailer court and purchased a home on Cypress Street.
After Jack passed away in 1984, Dorothy busied herself with volunteer activities notably with the United Church. She was also an avid gardener. Her yard was beautiful with an abundance of perennials, flowerpots, vegetable gardens and shrubbery. Dorothy loved a cup of tea, and her door was always open to her many friends popping in to share a cup, a cookie, and a visit. Her greatest joy was spending time with her two grandchildren. She felt blessed to have them so close to be able to pick them up for lunches, take them on adventures, have many sleepovers, and share a Schwan’s ice cream treat under the big tree in her yard.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Jack McFarlane, her parents Ken and Wylia Galbraith, brothers and sisters in law, Pat (Shirley) Galbraith, George (Elsie) Galbraith, parents in law William and Lela McFarlane, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, Jean (Malcolm) Colquhoun.
She will be forever remembered by her children Paddy McFarlane (canine companion Kaylee) and Brad (Paulette) McFarlane, grandchildren Justin McFarlane (Nicole) and Jade (Wes) Hoffmann. Great grandchildren Loch, Cain, Emily, and Zigmund; numerous nieces and nephews and all those who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Maple Creek United Church in Maple Creek.
