Gordon Royce Miller
June 13, 1935 – August 9, 2024
It is with heartfelt sadness and great love that the family of Gordon Royce Miller announce his passing on August 9, 2024 at the age of 89. Gordon was the cherished husband of Margaret, celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary, only days prior. He was born in Leader, Saskatchewan on June 13, 1935 to Dave and Lydia Miller and was the eldest of four children.
Gordon leaves to mourn his presence, his loving wife Margaret, his children Lyle and Cathy, Wade and Deb, Barry and Shelley, Carmen and Bill. His cherished grandchildren Nicole (Michael), Miles (Amy), Breanne, Amie (Kyle), Jory (Taylor), Diandra (Dave), Caylin (Brett); 9 beloved great-grandchildren Elliott, Winston, Gia, Giselle, Deakon, Holdyn, Theo, Arriya, Laya. His siblings Wayne and Sherry. His nephew and nieces Kevin, Leanne and Patti (Kent), special cousin and friend Adeline Miller as well as numerous nieces and nephews on the Meding side.
He was pre-deceased by his parents Dave and Lydia Miller, his in-laws Gus and Melita Meding. His sister and brother-in-law Lorie and Fred Holstein. His sister-in-law’s and brother-in-law’s; Jack and Elsie Hertz, Ervin and Charlotte Meding, Warren and Violet Ristau and one precious great-granddaughter, Olivia Miller at Christmas this past year.
He was raised on a farm south of Leader until his started school at which time they moved to town. He was raised very near his cousins and extended family. His friendship with his cousin Mervin and love for biking would start in these years. He and Mervin would play marbles for hours and hours, Gordon would say that Mervin was the marble king.
In 1953, he met Margaret Meding. They would be married in Leader, Saskatchewan on August 6, 1955. Their marriage was blessed with four children; Lyle, Wade, Barry and Carmen.
Following the completion of his schooling, Gordon began working at Miller Bros. as a mechanic. During the early 1960’s Gordon would travel to Moose Jaw to obtain his journeyman mechanics. The boys would look forward to his return each weekend with a special treat for them, a one-gallon glass bottle of root beer. He would continue to work for Miller Bros and eventually would partner with his brother Wayne and his Dad to form Miller Ford Ltd. Gordon apprenticed countless mechanics throughout his career including Wesley Miller who would eventually continue the Miller Ford tradition with Wayne following Gordon’s retirement.
Gordon and Margaret also owned MG Bus Lines and drove countless children to and from school over the course of 40+ years. Gordon was known as the driver of the family. He travelled a million miles following his children in their sports and this continued with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gordon and Margaret enjoyed many trips with family and friends; Christmas’ in Panorama, Cruises, countless road trips with their travel partners Mervin and Adeline and a very special 55th anniversary at the Crystal Cathedral in California.
Gordon and Margaret spent their retirement years in Leader. They loved their time spent at River’s Ridge Golf Course, never missed a local Flyer’s game and enjoyed the rink burger that came with. Gordon was a dedicated member of “Old Man’s Club” on Saturdays.
In 2023, Gordon and Margaret moved to Chinook in Medicine Hat. They quickly made new friendships and were welcomed in this new community. They enjoyed cards, visits and music nights.
Gordon lived his life with a gentleness and kindness that is unmatched, he was a pillar in the community, and we take solace that he is at Peace with the Lord. Gordon was a proud and generous man, but above all he was so very kind and loving. He lived a life of faith, family and tradition. We will all miss him dearly and love him forever.
