Harvey Baker Obituary

Following a lengthy battle with cancer, Harvey Roland Baker of Piapot passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at the age of 70 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by many friends and his cousins Shirley Beth, Deb, Barry, Lynda, Dale, Dean, Bernice and their families.

Harvey was predeceased by his parents Nathan and Edna; his sister Rita and his brother Dean who were both tragically killed in separate car accidents when Harvey was 10 and 20 years old; his grandparents Roland and Elva Baker and Harvey and Lily Elderkin; his cousins Richard Berreth and Lorne “Goody” Elderkin, as well as several aunts and uncles.

Harvey was born in Gull Lake, SK on January 16, 1954. Except for a brief period of time away, Harvey spent the majority of his life living and working in the Piapot area.  He and his dad lived and worked together operating a trucking and bale hauling business.  Harvey moved out to the Baker farm after his father passed away where he continued the family tradition of his grandfathers, Harvey and Roland. He served as RM of Piapot Councillor for Division 6 from 2004-2018 being Deputy Reeve.  He was also the RM Fire Chief during this time having served as a volunteer firefighter prior to becoming the chief.

Harvey was a member of the Piapot Legion from 1998 to the present.  Harvey would often reminisce about the stories his dad shared of his military experiences during World War II.  He was proud of the sacrifices his dad, uncles and other soldiers made during this period of our history.  At times he was saddened by how our society has just taken for granted the many freedoms these men fought for.

In his younger years, Harvey was always up to having a good time.  He would often find himself in situations, which he admitted in later years, were maybe not the best decisions he had ever made.

He loved to make people laugh.  So many people recall his unique sense of humor and remember being “cheered up” after a visit with him.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on October 5, 2024, in the Maple Creek cemetery.  Friends and family are invited to attend the service.  A come and go tea will be held after the service from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the basement of the Family Church located at 211 5th Avenue in Maple Creek.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to staff for the excellent care Harvey received at Cypress Lodge, the Southwest Integrated Healthcare Facility and Prairie Oasis house.

Thank you also to Mavis Bauer, Hans Martens, Chris Clark, Luis Sanchez for the many visits to see Harvey while he was hospitalized. A special thank you to Mark & Anita Wasilow for their visits and support before, during and after Harvey’s illness.
