Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Isabel Hok, beloved wife of the late George Hok.  Isabel passed away on August 4, 2023 at the age of 91 years.

Isabel was born in Medicine Hat on July 23, 1932 to Emil and Elma Bossert.  She was raised in the Walsh area and attended Muller School.  As a young single girl, Isabel loved to dance, and it was at a wedding dance that she met her future husband, George Hok.  They were married on October 30, 1951 and enjoyed 42 years of marriage before George’s passing in 1993.  George and Isabel lived west of Maple Creek and worked hard to build their ranch of Hereford cattle and raise their four children, Milo, Rodney, Shane & Della.  Isabel spent long days working alongside George in the fields and working cattle. She planted a large garden and did a lot of canning in those years.  She milked cows, made her own butter and cottage cheese and found the time to share her passion of cooking traditional German/Ukrainian food with her children.

Isabel was a woman who always knew what she wanted and went about her way to get it.  She was opinionated, resourceful, knowledgeable but kind.  She liked keeping up with the current news. She also kept a diary for over 70 years which resolved many an argument by referring back to those books.  Her mind was sharp.

Soon after Isabel and George sold the ranch and moved to town in 1991, Isabel joined several organizations and social clubs – Ladies Hospital Auxiliary, Sassy Sapphires Club, 21 Club, Ladies Canasta Card Club.  She loved to sew, knit, crochet and cheer on the cowboys and cowgirls at rodeos.  Her favorite pastime though was spending time with her grandchildren and when they were younger teaching them how to make cinnamon buns, bread, perogies and homemade noodles.  She loved listening to their stories, playing cards, and always showed a genuine interest in their lives.   She was the happiest when surrounded by her family.

Isabel is survived by her 4 children:  Milo (Angie) Hok, Rodney (Karen) Hok, Shane (Debbie) Hok, Della (Monty) Bowyer; her 8 grandchildren: Matthew (Michelle) Lang, Cheyenne Hok, Colton Hok, Randon Hok, Justin (Catherine) Hok, Tia Getz, Santana (Daniel) Bueckert, Levi Bowyer; and 6 great-grandchildren; Aubrey, Georgia, Bodie, Brixton, Camryn & Kenzie.

She was predeceased by her husband, George; and great grandson Aarit Hok.  Her parents, Emil & Elma Bossert; sisters, Evelyn (Otto) Janke, Lenora Parr and brother Marvin (Ruth) Bossert.

Isabel’s funeral will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at the Maple Creek United Church at 3:00 pm.

If friends so desire donations may be made in memory of Aarit Hok to:  Brooks and District Health Foundation, Aarit Hok Memorial Pediatric Fund, Bag 300, Brooks, Alberta T1R 1B3
