Jack Wong was born in Toison, Canton, China on June 29th,1927 to parents George and Shee.

He immigrated to Canada in 1955, alone, without his wife, Lan, and his three children Ken, Nancy, and Daniel. He remained in Canada for 10 years and  during that time, he worked at the B.C. Café with his parents, and brother, Chuck.

After the government re-opened immigration again, Jack was finally reunited with his family. About a year later, Howard was born, and the family moved to Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, where they bought a restaurant.  In Gull Lake, they had their daughter, Violet.

The business thrived and in 1980 he had an opportunity to go to Cypress Hills to open a new restaurant with two partners.  During that time, Ken and his family moved back to Gull Lake to help run the family business.  In 1982, Ken moved back to Calgary, the business was sold, and Jack moved to Maple Creek with the rest of the family.

During the summer, Jack and his partners ran the restaurant in the park but then in 1983 he formed a new partnership and bought the Esso station at the junction of 1 and 21. They ran it for a couple of years and then sold that business.

Another partnership was formed to build what is known today as “The Resort at Cypress Hills”.

At the age of 75, he decided to give retirement a try and he and mom remained in Maple Creek.  They loved to travel and saw many places. He also enjoyed sightseeing, golfing and casino-ing.  What he loved best was winning at mahjong. Even though his mind slowed, when it came to mahjong, he was sharp as a tack.

He had the privilege of watching all his children become successful adults and enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow.

He was widowed in 2011, but continued to live in his own house until he was 94.  Then as old age snuck up on him, he moved to Paradise Pines in the long-term care home.

He passed away peacefully in his sleep with his family by his side on July 3rd 2023,  just days after his 96th birthday.
