Joan Pierce Obituary

Major Joan Pierce went to her heavenly home on Sunday, April 27, 2020. Joan passed away peacefully at the Paradise Pine Lodge, Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.

Joan was born in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan on March 3, 1930. Growing up on a farm in Southwestern Saskatchewan Joan attended school in Bellfield, West Plains, Eastend and Moose Jaw.

Joan’s life work of serving God and others began in 1954 when she went to the Salvation Army Training College in Toronto, Ontario where she was commissioned and ordained as a Salvation Army officer.

Her service in the Salvation Army took her to many places in Canada – Woodstock, N.B., Toronto, Uxbridge, Kemptville, Ont., Melfort, Sask., Wetaskiwin, and Lethbridge, Alta.

What is the Salvation Army all about? “Wherever we see a need, we try to meet that need!” (Joan’s words on her 90th birthday).

After 35 years of service, Joan retired to Maple Creek, in her beloved home “prairie” province of Saskatchewan.

Joan loved life!! Hosting the “South Country Party”, baking and cooking for friends and family, feeding her favourite “red poll” birds, sprinkling sugar on her lettuce, puttering in her garden, travelling with her good friend Thelma and creating beautiful landscapes with her paint brush.

In Joan’s words – “there is something about history that is “magical”. One ponders over life, wondering what more I could have accomplished, however the past is the past. In God’s hands the future is still to be directed by Him. Life on earth has been great and I view with expectancy the life eternal that’s still ahead.”

You are there Joan! Enjoy eternity!

Joan’s memory will be treasured in the hearts of her family. Daughter Carolyn, brothers Larry (Joyce), sister-in-law Bette, Alfred (Barb), Colin (Audrey), Keith (Wendy), Leonard (Mai), sister Carol, nieces – Lori, Lisa, Leslie, Valerie, Janice, Christie, Debbie, Robin, Kim, Dayna, nephews – Stacey, Kendall, Derek, Byron, Curt, Ken, Doug, Ray, Arden, Evan, Randall, Drew.

Joan was predeceased by her good friend Thelma, her father John, mother Marion, brothers Byron (Bud), Alan, sister Patricia, sister-in-law Anne, nephews Ricky, David, Jeff and Darren.

A private family service will take place at the Salvation Army Church, Maple Creek, SK. This service may be viewed online at the Maple Creek Salvation Army Facebook page or on their YouTube channel on or after April 30th. A Celebration of Life for all family and friends will be held at a later date.
