It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Herbert Birchall. He was born January 10th, 1931, in Maple Creek Saskatchewan to Jack and Mabel Birchall, raised on his Father’s family homestead in Dirt Creek Saskatchewan, southeast of Piapot. John is predeceased by his daughter Enid, his parents, and brother Bill.
John leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Gladys, and his sons Lloyd (Sandy) and Harvey (Priscilla). As well as four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
He attended school at Manville Highschool in Maple Creek before taking studies in agriculture in Saskatoon.
In 1954, John married Glady’s Fyhn. Together, they started farming on Skull Creek whilst helping with Dad’s farm.
Later down the line, John got more cattle when he joined up with a group to form the 76 Grazing Coop. He was an active director and enjoyed serving on the Bull Buying Committee. John also served on the Piapot Wheat Pool Committee.
He always participated in activities and repairs at the Skull Creek Curling Club when he could as well.
John and Gladys shared many great times with the Neighbors; from curling, picnics, workbees, cards, dances, or just for a quick visit, it was always so much fun to have everyone around.
John and Gladys enjoyed Dad’s class reunions with classmates from the AG school in Saskatoon.
In 2003, the married couple retired to Maple Creek. John continued to commute back to the farm to help run machinery, check up on the cows, shoot gophers, and visit.
He took great pride in maintaining the new home in town. His neighbors comment “John is usually the first one out to shovel snow”. That went on until John and Gladys sold the house last year (2025).
