Kenneth (Ken) Perrin Obituary

Ken was the eldest son of Ernest and Margaret Perrin. He rode a horse to a one-room school house called Aylesford School up to and including grade 10 then rode a bus to Maple Creek for grades 11 and 12. Ken furthered his education when he attended Winston Bruce’s Saddle Bronc Riding School in 1966.

Ken never rodeoed ‘real hard’ but when he chose to go, he was often in the money. He cashed cheques from prestigious rodeos like the Calgary Stampede and Pendleton Round-up. He met his wife Marg (Hanson) at a rodeo in 1969 and they eloped that fall.

Together, they raised sons Cody (1971) and Justin (1974) and upwards of a thousand papered Quarter Horses. Ken was due to get his 50-year card from the American Quarter Horse Association this fall. Ken and Marg were charter members of the Cypress Hills Horse Breeders Association and their annual production sale which morphed into Ranch Country Horse Sale is Canada’s longest running horse sale.

Ken was a man of few words but his comments were generally wise or humorous and sometimes both. He received his ‘Gold Card’ from The Canadian Cowboys Association in 2021. For many years Ken took a part-time job in the fall of the year to help with the roundup at Arena Community Pasture. Other than that, he spent his entire life on the ranch his grandfather homesteaded in 1892. After a housefire in 2015 Ken and Marg moved to town but kept their horse herd at the ranch right to the end.

Ken was predeceased by his wife of 55 years Marg last November. He is survived by sons Cody and Justin (Cindy) and grandsons William and James. His sister Bernice and brother-in-law Ken Armstrong and brother Howard (Norma) and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of life at a later date.
