With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our mom. She was born Lila Evelyn Wenzel in Maple Creek Hospital on
May 22, 1943 and passed peacefully at home in Maple Creek on March 6, 2026.
Predeceased by her young sisters, Della and Darlene; her parents, Harve and Leona Wenzel, and her brothers, Melvin
and Kenneth, Lila is survived by her two children, Shawn and Stephanie.
Mom was a fighter, both a cancer and heart attack survivor. Very independent, she was a tough farm girl who wished to
live forever if given the choice. Her strong will, resourcefulness, and quick wit were witnessed and admired. She kept
caregivers, paramedics, and nurses (among others) laughing with her sense of humor.
As a young girl, mom enjoyed the country life, growing up on a farm north of Consul, raising and showing calves through
4H Club, and later attending dances in Consul. She always loved country music, singing, and dancing. She taught herself
to play the accordion, guitar, and a bit of piano.
Mom quit school as soon as she turned 16 and started working, housekeeping and cooking on local farms. Then she
moved to a boarding house in Maple Creek and started waitressing. There she met our dad, Harold Hawrylak. They were
together until 1991. Mom also worked as a nanny and nurses’ aid in Medicine Hat. However, her main devotion was
being a stay-at-home mom and homemaker.
After many years spent raising her children in Edmonton, Lila returned to the quiet life in Maple Creek. There she cared
for several local children until she retired.
Although a very private person, our mom touched the hearts of many. She deeply appreciated those who assisted and
showed her kindness, especially during her final year. You know who you are and we extend our deepest gratitude.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your favourite charity in memory of Lila Evelyn Hawrylak.
Per mom’s wishes, she is being cremated and there will be no formal service.
