Peter Halyung Obituary

Peter James Halyung passed away peacefully at his farm on Monday, November 3, 2025 at 95 years of age. He is survived by his brother Joe (Evelyn), and predeceased by siblings John (Shirley), Ethel, and Tony. Uncle Peter will be missed by Paul, Eileen (Rob), Warren (Carol), Faith, and Josh.  Great-Uncle Peter will be remembered by Fawn, Wyatt, and Ryder. He will also be missed by his faithful dog “Hank”.

Peter was born on February 11, 1930 on the family homestead NW14-02-25-W3rd near Arena, Saskatchewan to parents John and Mary (Liptak) Halyung. This is the same original family homestead quarter that Peter, as the owner of in 2015, received the ‘Century Family Farm Award’. Peter felt very blessed that the Halyung family was able to achieve 100 years of continuous farming operations on this homestead, and the part that he was able to play in making this possible.

Peter purchased his own farm, SW35-02-25-W3, in the early 1950’s, which was just a little over two miles from the family homestead he grew up on. This farm, tucked into the south side of the “Old Man on His Back” hills, would become his home for more than 70 years, until his passing. He truly loved farming and treasured the land he lived on. He especially loved the endless view, all the way to the Bears Paw Mountains in Montana, from on top of these hills behind his house. As a result, he developed an iron determination to continue to live out his life on his farm, there was no retiring to town for him. When asked what his secret was for being able to continue working at such an advance age he would say - “You’ve got to keep moving every day – never stop moving.” It could be said that Peter put into practice the following quote from the Bible - “Plant your seed in the morning and keep busy all afternoon, for you don’t know if profit will come from one activity or another—or maybe both.” – Ecclesiastes 11:6

Peter was an intensely private and reserved individual, strong willed, and with a profound belief in God’s blessings and grace. Even when faced with kidney cancer over twenty years ago, which resulted in the removal of a kidney, Peter leaned on his faith in God for healing and the strength to win the battle.

As a child of the Great Depression of the 1930’s, he knew what hardship was and the importance being resourceful. Also, as the eldest son he took it upon himself to look out for his siblings, and to assist his parents as they aged.

In honor of Peter’s wishes, there will be no public funeral service. He will be buried beside family members at the Maple Creek Cemetery.
