Richard Allen Chabot passed away at the Maple Creek hospital on September 19 with family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Eileen; daughter Jennifer (Jason) Eiserman; son Daron; granddaughter Hannah; brothers Gerald and Doug (Joyce), and sisters, Terry (Gary) Siegle and Yvonne Rea, and sister-in-law Brenda. He was predeceased by his brother, Ronald, and parents, Bernice and Lucien (Frenchie) Chabot.
Richard was born in Maple Creek on June 9, 1951. He showed early promise in sports, and excelled in football, basketball, and track and field in high school, as well as hockey and baseball. He played junior hockey in Peace River, Unity, and for the Swift Current Broncos before 1970 when he married his high school sweetheart, Eileen Koch. The two soon welcomed daughter Jennifer in 1971. They resided with Eileen’s parents, Frank and Emily Koch, until Eileen finished high school, then moved the family to Leader, Sask. Richard found employment at Miller Ford and Eileen worked as a teller for Credit Union. In 1976, their little family grew when Daron was born. Richard played hockey for the Leader Flyers and baseball for the Barons and they made many friends. In 1979, the opportunity arose to return to Maple Creek, so the family relocated. Richard worked for Cypress Motors for 28 years, and then for Kal Tire until he retired. Richard played for the Senior Hawks for many years, then dedicated himself to coaching and mentoring the players on the team. He coached minor hockey as well, and was a common fixture as a referee in the Southwest. He became a part of the Old Timers hockey team, the Sweat Hogs, and enjoyed many years of friendship and travel with his teammates. A passion for the outdoors drove Richard to fish, hunt, and camp with his family. He enjoyed the harvest of his efforts by making delicious sausage and pan fried trout. He was a favorite uncle, even though he enjoyed teasing his numerous nieces and nephews mercilessly. He was a kind soul, always willing to lend a hand or provide a laugh, and will be sorely missed.
On Friday, September 27, there will be a private gathering for Richard, followed by a casual reception for all who knew him at the Maple Creek Senior Center hall at 2:30.
