Sydney Clarence McGillivray, born June 21, 1942, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025, at the age of 82. Raised in Piapot, Saskatchewan, where he was a proud third-generation resident, Sydney was one of the community’s last long-term citizens and a familiar face to all.
Syd is survived by his wife Yvonne, daughter Mavis (Trevor), granddaughters Lauren and Auria. He also leaves behind sisters Carolyn (Glen), Evelyn, and brother Lyle (Betty), along with many nephews, nieces, including several great nephews and nieces. He is proceeded by his parents Clarence and Marjorie and many cherished family members and close friends.
Sydney worked for many years as the Administrator of the RM #110 of Piapot, a role in which he dedicated himself to the well-being of his township and its people. He was married to Yvonne for over 43 years, and together they raised their daughter, Mavis. Sydney’s life was full of many endeavors from camping at the West Block to salmon fishing on the coast of British Columbia. Winters were often spent at bonspiels, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of friends and the thrill of the game.
Sydney was known for his hospitality, always welcoming visitors with a warm smile and a coffee. After retiring, he cherished time spent with family, visiting with friends, relishing the quiet moments at home, playing cards and watching as many curling games as possible. He always had time to say hello and made time to chat to all those who he knew.
Sydney’s big presence, memorable laugh, and dedication to community will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory lives on in the many lives he touched.
We will celebrate his life Saturday, May 17th, at the Legion in Piapot from 1-5pm. Those who knew Syd are very welcome to come.
