Bethel, Violet (nee Jensen)
Violet Bethel passed away peacefully at the Maple Creek Hospital on December 25, 2022 at the age of 103. Violet was born in Tompkins, SK on June 13, 1919 to Ole & Thera (Lindquist) Jensen and was the eldest of three children. Violet completed her schooling in Tompkins and entered the work force at a local grocery store. She then worked for the Post Office for 10 years before moving to the Public Library.
Violet married Harold Bethel in 1953 and they ranched at Skull Creek until 1972 when Harold’s poor health resulted in them selling the ranch and moving to Maple Creek. On August 13, 1973 Harold passed away at age 56 and only a few hours later Violet’s father, Ole, passed away at the same hospital.
Violet worked at the Maple Creek Library until 1997 at the age of 78. She always said she would retire “when computers came in”, and she was true to her word. She was a veracious reader, sports fan (loved the Saskatchewan Roughriders) and enjoyed playing cards. Violet was an amazing woman, living on her own until she reached 102 years of age. Her memory was sharp right until her passing.
Violet is predeceased by her parents, Ole & Thera Jensen, husband, Harold, brothers Lynn (Anna) Jensen and Lloyd, as well as Harold’s brother and wife, Louis & Gwen Bethel, Harold’s sister and husband, Irene & Frank Wolfater.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Anna Jensen, nieces and nephews, Larry (Colleen) Jensen, Jerry (Cindy) Jensen, Karen Jensen and Harold’s family, Albert Bethel, Mary Bethel and Maxine (David) McLeod.
Violet’s family would like to thank Jeanie and the staff at the Cypress Lodge and Dr. Sotouden and nurses at the Maple Creek Hospital for their compassionate care.
Memorial service to be held at the Maple Creek United Church on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev Carolyn Conarroe officiating. Lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers donations to the United Church would be appreciated by the family.
