November 1, 1933 ~ June 1, 2016 (age 82) 82 Years Old

Virgil Cyril Mathew Hoffman (Virge), born on November 1, 1933 in Humboldt, passed away peacefully at 82 years of age on June 1, 2016 at the Leader Union Hospital in Leader, Saskatchewan. Beloved husband of Annette Hoffman (nee Stolz), father of Rhonda Penno (Mike) of Regina and Dwight Hoffman (Gloria) of Leader, and proud grandfather of Lindsay Markwart, Nathan Markwart, Krista Ressler (Carmen) and Brianna Hoffman (Tad); and great grandfather to Declan Ressler. Survived by his sister Francis Hutmacher of Winnipeg.

Virge had a distinguished career as an educator for 33 years. He began his career teaching in Rosthern and arrived in Leader, Saskatchewan for what would be 29 years of service to the Leader School Division from 1956 - 1985. During those years he was a teacher and elementary school Vice-Principal, Division Supervisory Assistant, and Director of Education for twelve years. Throughout his career, he held various positions on the Teachers’ Association, Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation, the Saskatchewan Association of Superintendents and Directors of Education and LEADS, and was a Trustee of the Cypress Hills Community College. Virge was granted a B.Ed. degree in 1966 and a B.A. in 1973.

In addition to his many professional achievements, Virge was immensely dedicated to the community of Leader. He served on the Town Council and was elected Mayor of Leader from 1985 – 1991. He held many offices with the local and district Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Curling Club, Rec. Board, Leader Air Cadet Squadron as Commanding Officer, Chairman of the new Town Hall Committee, and taught outdoor cooking with the 4-H club among his countless community contributions.

Virge enjoyed many hobbies including baseball, bowling, curling, golf, gardening, fishing, travelling, and cooking.  Above all, Virge took pride in bringing family together and organizing every last detail. From the annual family fishing trip to a Christmas dinner with full courses, his love was abidingly generous. He will be forever missed.
