It is with heavy hearts we announce that Yvonne Joan Hassett passed away at the age of 90 on October 17, 2023 in Maple Creek. Yvonne was born on July 2, 1933, in Admiral, Saskatchewan, to her parents, Earl and Kathleen Bratvold. Yvonne is survived by her spouse Dean Hassett, her four daughters, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
After qualifying as a registered nurse in Moose Jaw, Yvonne nursed in Swift Current, Saskatchewan and in Jamaica, later receiving an award for excellence in bedside nursing. She then spent several years as a public health nurse in the Maple creek area. She worked with First Nations people, the disabled, the elderly, and with schools. Yvonne married Dean in 1959 and lived on the family farm near Maple Creek. In 1984 Yvonne began a second career as a volunteer and coordinated a CanSurmount group. On Yvonnes own time, and at her own expense; she visited seniors, shut-ins, and the bereaved. She was widely admired for her generosity and kindness and recognized with the prestigious Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 1991.
For those who knew her best, Yvonne was famous for her thriving vegetable garden. As a home maker, wife, mother and grandmother, her cooking and baking was what she was truly known for. The kids couldn’t wait to arrive home after their school bus ride to be welcomed to the aroma of home baked bread and buns. Yvonne also loved music. She was an excellent piano player, and sang in the United Church Choir. Her and Dean danced two-step, waltz and polka at many outings. Yvonne loved to laugh and have fun. She would make her own costumes and head to town on Halloween to find someone that needed a laugh. She will be fondly remembered for the thoughtful and caring person she was, and she will be dearly missed.
Yvonne is survived by her husband Dean, her daughter Kelly (Darren) Shell and their children, Jerrad (Kristin), Coltan (Tayler), and Jordana (Jonas), daughter Corey (Rob) Forester and their children Chyanne (Je'sus) and Logan (Tennielle). Her daughter Dana (Dan) Hassett- Sellinger and their children Dean (1991-2006), Sayla (Taylor), and Silken (Colin Johansen). Rebne Lehr (Kevin Patterson) and her children Martika and Tunisha; her siblings Keith Bratvold and Louise Gifford.
